Polytherics is a company dedicated to using biomedical polymers to optimise pharmaceuticals in particular biopharmaceuticals for the treatment and cure of the worlds most important diseases.
Polytherics LtdPolytherics was established as a spinout from Imperial College and the School of Pharmacy in 2002 to exploit novel PEGylation technology called TheraPEG. Polytherics has proved its technology, signed its first commercial contracts that include long term royalty streams and has established interest from a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
TheraPEG technology exploits the selective chemistry of naturally occurring disulfide bonds in proteins for the attachment of PEG onto a specific part of the protein or antibody. Since disulfide bonds occur naturally in the structure of most proteins, TheraPEG technology avoids adding further substances to the protein that can extend the clinical trials process
Drug companies continually seek ways to improve their drugs in order to maintain competitive advantage; PEGylation is regarded as the method most likely to achieve this. For example, a weekly injection is far more appealing than a daily injection.
