Calon Cardio TechnologyCalon Cardio Technology Ltd is developing the next generation of implantable micro-pump for the treatment of heart failure. Heart failure is a huge global health problem with several million sufferers in North America and Western Europe alone.

Current pumps have clinically proven that heart assist pumps are a safe and effective treatment, and indeed in many cases they are the only method of treatment. However, these devices have yet to gain widespread acceptance due to their large size necessitating highly invasive surgery for fitment. They are also very expensive putting them out of the reach of many healthcare providers such as the NHS.

The technology being developed by Calon addresses both these problems and promises to realise the vision of heart assist pumps becoming the routine method of treatment for heart failure.

The collaboration with Swansea University’s Institute of Innovation has provided the ideal platform for Calon to develop its business, and being located within the Institute of Life Science gives Calon access to a world class research facility. Calon has already utilised the facilities and expertise within the ILS and is in the process of developing further collaborations for key aspects of the product development.
