Ambicare - history & progressBackground
Ambicare (formerly Lumicure) is a spinout company from the University of St Andrews and Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. The founders, Professor Ifor Samuel and Professor James Ferguson have combined their respective expertise to develop the next generation of light based medical and cosmetic products using new light emitting diode (LED) technologies.
Progress
Ambicare has now completed development of its lead product (Ambulight) for the treatment of non melanoma skin cancer. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), the combination of light and photo-sensitive drugs is gaining momentum as a method of removing tumours. Tumours are often located in sensitive areas such as the face and neck and PDT results in limited scarring. Ambulight has received strong backing from leading UK dermatologists and is expected to receive regulatory approval to sell the product in the EU within the next few weeks.
Future
Ambicare also has two further products in development; for the treatment of acne and for skin rejuvenation.
